The story behind Hey Kay Budgets
Welcome to Hey Kay Budgets — a place built for real people dealing with real financial struggles. I'm Kay, and my relationship with money wasn't always a healthy one.
For years, I lived paycheck to paycheck, terrified every time an unexpected bill showed up. I watched my credit card balances creep higher while my savings sat at zero. I knew I needed to change, but every financial resource I found felt either too complicated or too judgmental. Nobody was talking about budgeting in a way that felt real, relatable, or actually achievable for someone in my situation.
So I figured it out myself — the hard way. I tried every budgeting method I could find: the 50/30/20 rule, zero-based budgeting, the envelope system, spending freezes. Some worked. A lot didn't. But through trial, error, and a whole lot of spreadsheets, I slowly developed a system that actually fit my life.
Then in 2025, something clicked. I went from barely saving anything to putting away nearly $20,000 in a single year — while still paying down debt, covering my bills, and yes, still going out for happy hour occasionally. It wasn't about perfection. It was about having the right tools, the right mindset, and a plan I could actually stick to.
I built Hey Kay Budgets because I wanted other people to have access to the tools and honest guidance that helped me turn things around. No fluff, no shame, no "just stop buying coffee" advice. Just practical, real-world strategies for people who are trying to do better with their money.
The calculators here — the Debt Payoff Calculator and the Mortgage Calculator — are exactly the kinds of tools I wish I'd had when I was drowning in debt. They take the math out of your hands so you can focus on the strategy. Want to know exactly how much interest you're paying on your credit card? There's a calculator for that. Wondering how much faster you'd pay off your house if you added $200 a month to your payment? We've got you covered.
Beyond the calculators, the blog posts on this site come directly from my own experience. Every tip, every strategy, every mistake I describe — I've lived it. That's not something you'll find on a generic finance site written by someone who's never had to choose between groceries and a car payment.
Hey Kay Budgets is for:
You don't need to be a math whiz. You don't need a six-figure salary. You just need a starting point — and that's exactly what this site is.
Beyond the free financial calculators, you'll find in-depth blog posts covering the strategies that actually worked for me: building a one-month buffer so you stop living paycheck to paycheck, setting up sinking funds so "unexpected" expenses stop blindsiding you, building a starter emergency fund even when money is tight, and avoiding the most common mistakes that keep people broke even when they're trying hard.
I'm not a licensed financial advisor, and nothing on this site is professional financial advice. But I am someone who has been in the trenches, made the mistakes, and come out the other side with a clear head, a funded savings account, and a system I genuinely believe in. I think that experience counts for a lot.
